It is important to know that reef fishes exhibit a diverse array of life styles to cope up with the living together in the crowded and competitive world of the reef. Some species are always found in groups while others occur in pairs or are solitary. Schooling is a strategy adopted by many species that live or travel in open water away from the protection of the reef. A large number of reef fishes are territorial. Territorial species typically guard an area encloseing one or more resources of food, shelter, or potential mates or nesting areas. Vision and color are importance in the social lifes of most species of the reef fishes.
